This Week in Spartan Athletics - March 22-28

This Week in San José State Athletics is here to catch you up on last week's action and see what's ahead for the Spartans!

Please note - Due to San José State, Santa Clara County and State of California guidelines and directives, spectators are not permitted at any San José State Athletics events. 

Women's Tennis (7-0)
This Week: The Spartans begin Mountain West play as the team welcomes Wyoming and Colorado State to the Spartan Tennis Complex. The team plays Wyoming on Friday and the Rams on Sunday. Wyoming and Colorado State will play each other on Saturday in a neutral-site match.

Last Week:  The contest against Saint Mary's went down to the final singles match to determine the winner. Rozalina Youseva needed three sets to win her match and secure the seventh win of the season for SJSU.

Spartan Fact: This was the first win for the Spartans over the Gaels since April 8, 2003, when they won 4-3 in a match very similar to this one. The Spartans had lost six straight to the Gaels.

Spartan Fact #2: The 2021 Spartans have matched the 2013 team by winning seven consecutive matches. The 2012 team won 12 consecutive matches in the middle of the season schedule.

Volleyball (4-8, 4-8)
This Week: The Spartans return home for the final two matches of the season. The team hosts New Mexico Thursday afternoon and San Diego State on Saturday.

Last Week: The Spartans lost twice at MW leader UNLV, 3-1 and 3-0. 

Spartan Fact: Haylee Nelson combined for 22 kills in the team's two matches last week.

Men's Soccer (1-1-2, 1-1-2 WAC)
This Week: The Spartans are back on the road this week, meeting California Baptist on Friday afternoon in Irvine. 

Last Week: San Jose State rallied from behind for a second straight week to earn its second consecutive 1-1 draw, this one coming against unbeaten UTRGV. 

Spartan Fact: Saturday's draw was the team's second straight tie, marking the program's first set of back-to-back draws since the 2011 campaign (1-1 at UC Riverside and 1-1 vs. Santa Clara).

This Week: The Spartans are set for the first series of the 2021 season as they welcome first-place San Diego State to Excite Ballpark for three games this weekend.

Last Week: No action last week. 

Spartan Fact: Head coach Brad Sanfilippo is entering his fourth season at the helm in San Jose.

Women's Soccer (0-4-1, 0-4-1)
This Week: The Spartans are at the midway point of the abbreviated season and will make another two-game road trip this weekend with stops at UNLV (3/26) and San Diego State (3/28). 

Last Week: The Spartans picked up their first point of the season with a 1-1 tie on the road against Nevada before dropping a hard-fought match, 1-0, at Boise State. 

Spartan Facts: Freshman Jaiden McClellan scored her first goal as a Spartan in the tie against Nevada.

Women's Golf
This Week: The Spartans play at the PING/ASU Invitational this weekend at the Papago Golf Club. Fans will be permitted under Papago Golf Club's COVID-19 Policy which can be found here

Last Week: The Spartans finished eighth at the MountainView Collegiate.

Spartan Fact: Kajsa Arwefjäll recorded her fourth top-five finish of the season as she tied for fourth at the MountainView Collegiate. She shot an even-par 72 in the final round, to finish at five-under par 211. She was among a group of three players that led the tournament on the par 4s, shooting -3 on those holes. She made 10 birdies and 39 birdies in her 56 holes played.

Men's Golf
This Week: The team is competing in two tournaments this week - Oregon Duck Invitational and The Goodwin.

Last Week: No action.

Spartan Fact: The 74th Western Intercollegiate presented by Topgolf, April 12-14, at the Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, Calif., is three weeks away. The GOLF Channel will provide three hours of live coverage each day.

Softball (4-13, 0-3)
This Week: The Spartans are looking to bounce back as they host their first conference series of the year against Nevada beginning on Saturday with a doubleheader. 

Last Week: SJSU was swept at Fresno State to start the Mountain West slate 0-3. 

Spartan Fact: Sophomore Jocylyn Vidal had a productive series against the Bulldogs as she took turns at both shortstop and pitcher. She allowed three hits and four runs in 7.2 innings of work in the circle in relief duty, including a perfect 2.0 innings in game two to finish out the game. She also had a double and solo home run at the plate.

Track & Field
This Week: No action.

Last Week: Both Spartan programs continued their strong start to the 2021 season as the men's team took second place and the women finished in third at the Hornet Invitational in Sacramento. 

Spartan Fact: Sophomore Gracious Togiai set a school record and took first place in the women's shot put on Saturday with a mark of 14.29m.

Women's Water Polo (1-5, 0-2 MPSF)
Last Week: The Spartans lost a pair of matches at #4 Arizona State, 11-4 and 12-8.

This Week: San Jose State opens Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action with a pair of conference contests at #5-Arizona State.
 
Spartan Fact: Olga Descalzi Portell became the 20th player in school history to score 100 career goals with her one score in the 11-4 loss at Arizona State on March 20.

Spartan Fact #2: Senior Riley Agerbeek was named one of the top-10 minority female scholar-athletes by Diverse Issues in Higher Education's Arthur Ashe, Jr., Sports Scholar Awards program. She is the only water polo player listed among the 10 female scholar-athletes.

Women's Gymnastics
Last Week: The Spartans completed the 2021 season by recording the team's best score of the season with a 194.475 at Air Force this past Saturday.

Spartan Fact: Three different Spartans won events titles on the day. Lauren Macpherson tied for first on the vault as she tied her career best with a 9.800. Jada Mazury won the bars with a season high 9.850. Emma Milne also tied for first on beam with a season high 9.875.
