Sacramento, Calif.—The San José State beach volleyball team split a pair of duals Saturday in Sacramento, falling 4-1 to Santa Clara but defeating Pacific 4-1 for the team's first win of 2021.
Against the Broncos, Spartan pair Letizia Cammillucci and Siena Brewster won in straight sets, 21-19, 21-16, and Allyson Alden and Allison Periera won 21-17, 21-14 for the two Spartan points.. Jaida Ward and Haylee Nelson lost in three sets, falling 21-16 in the first set, winning the second 21-19, but falling in a closely contested set 15-12.
The team reversed the course against Pacific by winning four of the five matches played for the 4-1 victory and the first win of the season. Ward and Nelson needed three sets to win 22-20, 17-21, 15-9. Kacy Hele and Pereira came from behind to win 13-21, 21-12, 15-11. The other two Spartan wins were in straight sets by Cammillucci and Brewster (25-23, 21-18) and Alden and Mia Schafer (21-19, 21-14). Kiley Lingenfelter and Calli Novak played a hard-fought match but lost in three sets 21-71, 16-21, 15-10.
The Spartans are now 1-2 on the season and play two more duals on Sunday – at Sacramento State and at UC Davis.
