Spartan Comeback Attempts Fall Short In San Diego On Saturday

San Diego, Calif. - Opening the second half of its 14-game road trip with a doubleheader on Saturday at San Diego State, the well-traveled Spartans were unable to steal a victory off the first-place Aztecs.

SJSU secured nine hits for the day and was led by senior Santiago Cantu and freshman Charles McAdoo, each of whom finished the afternoon with two RBI.

Head coach Brad Sanfilippo's club will return to action on Sunday afternoon in the series finale against San Diego State. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

Singles - Game 1 (L, 17-3)
- Senior Andrew Jurado plated the team's first run of the day in the top of the fourth, an RBI single to left field that scored Dalton Bowling from second.

- First baseman Ruben Ibarra then homered for the eighth time in his last 11 games in the fifth, a two-run shot to deep left field.

- Sophomore Trevor Ernt got the start on the mound for the Spartans.

- Right-hander Sean Prozell and southpaw Ben Polack each made appearances out of the bullpen.

- Polack notched three strikeouts in three innings of work.

Singles - Game 2 (L, 10-6)
- In addition to Cantu and McAdoo's two-RBI performances, senior Jack Colette notched an RBI in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.

- The Spartans jumped out to an early lead, earning a 2-0 advantage on a passed ball and Colette sac bunt in the top half of the third.

- McAdoo launched the first home run of his collegiate career in the sixth, a two-run shot over the wall in left field.

- McAdoo now owns the team's longest current hit streak, extending his to three games.

- Cantu would bring in both Ibarra and Nik Trapani in the ninth with a long double to center.

- Corey Sanchez, Wesley Clawson and Will Tomlinson took to the mound for the Spartans in game two.

- Sanchez notched five strikeouts while Tomlinson tallied three and Clawson carded two.

- Tomlinson worked two full frames, allowing just one hit and no runs.

- Tomlinson retired the side in order in his first inning of the day.

- Sanchez also looked dominant at times, facing the minimum in both the first and fourth frames.
