Santa Barbara, Calif.----- The San Jose State University women's water polo team successfully opened its 2022 season with a convincing 15-7 non-conference win over host No. 18 UC Santa Barbara to conclude the first day of the 14-team UCSB Winter Invite.
In her college debut, freshman Cila David poured in three of her match-high five goals in the first quarter as the Spartans (1-0) took a commanding 6-1 lead.
• The 15 goals match the most scored by a San Jose State in a season-opening contest since 2015 when the Spartans defeated Sonoma State, 15-5.
• San Jose State had an outstanding shooting percentage converting 55.6 percent of its shots compared to 33.3 percent by UCSB.
• The Spartans scored in the first 0:38 and never trailed.
• Nine Spartans scored in the UC Santa Barbara win - David, 5; Olga Descalzi, and Renee Fleming, 2; Clarissa Wandinger, Maiken Pardon, Riley Agerbeek, Lauren Woolley, Lucy Miszewski, and Lior Ben David, 1, each.
• Goalkeeper Elaina Davey was credited with three saves.
• San José State takes on #21-Cal Baptist and #9-UC San Diego in UCSB Winter Invite doubleheader action on Saturday, January 22.
