Spartans Set USFL Record with Seven Draft Picks

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Former quarterback Josh Love was the second pick in the 12th round to the Pittsburgh Maulers and wide receiver Bailey Gaither joined Love with the Maulers with the fifth pick in the 14th round to lead a record seven San José State draft picks in the inaugural United States Football League (USFL) draft earlier this week. SJSU had the most players taken from any school in the USFL Draft.

SJSU wide receiver Tre Walker was also picked by the Maulers, going fourth in the 17th round and defensive tackle Boogie Roberts joined Love, Gaither and Walker with the Maulers in the 25th round with the second pick. The final Spartans taken in the draft were outside linebacker Frank Ginda (30th round, fourth pick), followed by punter Michael Carrizosa (33rd round, sixth pick) both going to the Michigan Panthers. Long snapper Ryan DiSalvo was taken third in the 35th round to cap off a record day for the Spartans.

Bailey Gaither, WR, 2015-20

  • Played in 44 games with 27 starts
  • Two-time All-Mountain West honoree
  • On the San José State career lists for touchdown receptions (tied for second with 18), receiving yards (fourth with 2,227), and total receptions (11th with 135)
  • 22 of his 42 career pass receptions are for 20 yards or more
  • Eight games with 100 or more receiving yards as a Spartan
  • Set a school record for consecutive games with a touchdown reception in 2019 with six


Tre Walker, WR, 2017-20

  • One of the top-10 pass catchers in school history
  • On the career lists, No. 3 for receptions with 144 and No. 6 for pass receiving yardage with 2,163
  • One of six Spartans with a 1,000-yard receiving season
  • 10 career games with at least 100 receiving yards
  • Has the No. 6 (209 yards) and No. 10 (193 yards) single-game receiving yardage totals at San José State
  • First Spartan to have multiple games with at least 12 catches in a career
  • Two-time All-Mountain West selection


Boogie Roberts, DT, 2014-18

  • Played with Los Angeles Rams during 2019 preseason
  • 47 games played with 36 starts
  • Had a streak of 20 consecutive starts covering the 2016 and 2017 seasons
  • Played defense and also on offense as a running back during his colligate career


Frank Ginda, OLB, 2015-17

  • Member of the Miami Dolphins and New Orlease Saints during preseason (2018, 2019)
  • A three-season starter at a linebacker position
  • 38 games played with 35 starts
  • No. 8 on the San José State career list for tackles with 352
  • Tied for No. 9 on the university's career list for tackles for loss at 29.0
  • 17 games played with 10 or more tackles
  • A three-time Academic All-Mountain West award recipient
  • First Spartan linebacker to earn CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition


Michael Carrizosa, P, 2014-17

  • School's career leader in punting average at 44.0 and punting yards (9,907)
  • 12 career punts of 60 or more yards
  • First San José State punter to finish in the top-five nationally in punting in two seasons (2015, 2017) and in the top-20 nationally in punting in consecutive seasons (2015, 2016, 2017)
  • Set the San Jose State single-season record for punting average with a 47.5 mark in 2015
  • Second San Jose State player in history to be invited to the annual December College Football Awards Show as a 2015 Ray Guy Award finalist
