Diallo's Eight Blocks Sets EC Record in Win Over Alabama State

SAN JOSE, Calif.—Ibrahima Diallo set an Event Center record for blocked shots and Omari Moore and Alvaro Cardenas led the Spartans in scoring as the San José State men's basketball team improved to 3-0 with a 70-57 win over Alabama State Tuesday night inside the Provident Credit Union Event Center.

  • Diallo blocked eight shots, all in the second half, to set the building's San José State player record. He broke the record of seven set by Brandon Clarke against UNLV on January 28, 2017.
  • Diallo was also one off the school record of nine set by Menelik Barbary against Idaho at the WAC Tournament on March 6, 2007.
  • Moore led all scorers with a season-high 19 points. He and Cardenas each dished out four assists.
  • Cardenas played all 40 minutes as he scored a career-best 17 points in the game. He was 6-for-10 from the field including 3-for-5 from three-point range.
  • Sage Tolbert III led the Spartans in rebounding with seven, despite playing just 27 minutes, and added four points.
  • The Spartans were cold from the field to start the game, falling behind 9-0, but Cardenas sparked a 7-0 run to spark the team.
  • SJSU took a 36-33 lead into halftime and held the Hornets without a field goal made for the final 1:45 of the first half and the first 4:03 of the second half.
  • San José State made a 13-2 run over the final 4:17 of the first half to take the lead for good.
  • The Spartans start the season 3-0 for the first time since 2010-11.
  • The three wins before Thanksgiving also matches the most wins in school history before the holiday. The 2010-11 team and 2019-20 team also won three games before turkey day.

UP NEXT – The Spartans finish off a four-game homestand on Thursday with Hofstra beginning at 7 p.m., inside the Provident Credit Union Event Center. Fans who cannot make the game can watch on NBC Sports Bay Area.
