SJSU Softball Signs Five in 2023-24 Class

SAN JOSE, Calif.— Alexis Toner, Makayla Freshour, Taylor Chillingworth, Ava Conti and Carly Cummings have all signed National Letters of Intent with SJSU softball, announced by head coach Tammy Lohmann on Thursday. The five new additions span the globe and will join the softball program in the fall of 2023. 

"We are excited to welcome Taylor, Ava, Alexis, Carly and Makayla to Spartan Nation," said Lohmann. "This class brings with them championship experience from international ball, travel ball and high school. Their individual strengths, versatility, and desire to win will bring an immediate impact to our roster. We cannot wait to help them continue to develop both on and off the field."

Alexis Toner, 5-8, Pitcher/UT, Anaheim, CA/Elite Academic Academy

  • Incoming freshman from Southern California who ranks in the top 220 in her class. 
  • Placed fifth in TCS Nationals with USA Athletics softball team.
  • Also placed third in PGF Shootout with USA Athletics Softball team. 
  • Planning to study Psychology.


Makayla Freshour, 5-5, Infielder/Catcher, Vacaville, CA/Vacaville High School

  • Earned a spot on the M.E.L All-league team 2020-2021 and 2021-2022. 
  • Awarded Best Bat 2021-2022
  • Won 2019 PGF ultimate challenge champions.
  • Planning to study Kinesiology.


Taylor Chillingworth, 5-8, Infielder/UT, Adelaide, Australia/Saint Aloysius

  • Coming by way of Australia which is roughly 8,000 miles away from San Josè State.
  • Played for South Australia U23 (Batter of the tournament, FIELD- 1000) and was a National Champion with the South Australian (Starz) Open Women's 2022 team.
  • Named the 2021 and 2022 Junior Athlete of the Year for the State of South Australia.
  • Planning to study Kinesiology. 


Ava Conti, 5-8, Pitcher/UT, Redwood City, CA/Claremont High School

  • Currently playing for San Jose Sting 18U.
  • High School team won the 2021 CCS Division III and qualified for states.
  • Named Extra Innings Softball 48th nationally ranked player in 2021.
  • Placed Top 15 at PGF Nationals Premiere in 2021.
  • Planning to study Kinesiology.


Carly Cummings, 5-4, Outfielder, San Jose, CA/ St. Francis High School

  • Won WCAL, CCS and Norcal Championships with St. Francis sophomore and junior year.
  • Named WCAL First Team All League, and a top 30 pre-season players in Northern California.
  • Named First Team All Bay Area per West Coast Preps and Second Team All Bay Area News Per Mercury News. 
  • Planning to study Child Development.
