SAN JOSE, Calif. – San José State Athletics held their annual Sammy Awards at the California Theater and it was televised on NBC Sports Bay Area for the second consecutive year. Hosted by Justin Allegri and Kylen Mills, 33 awards were presented to student-athletes and teams based on their accomplishments on and off the playing surface during the 2022-23 season.
SJSU just ended their best athletics year in school history as women's soccer and baseball both won Mountain West championships, while volleyball, softball and men's soccer made it to title games and women's golf qualified for their second consecutive NCAA Championship with Lucia Lopez Ortega becoming the second straight SJSU women's golfer to finish runner-up at the women's golf national championship, plus Emilia Sjostrand became the first women's track and field indoor and outdoor All-American in SJSU history.
It's also the first season the Spartans had made postseason tournaments in football, men's basketball and baseball all in the same year and they were one of only 31 schools to make a bowl game and an NCAA baseball regional this year and is the first time since 1986-87 that both men's basketball and football finished with a winning record.
