Men's Water Polo Adds Ten To 2023 Signing Class

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The 2023-2024 San José State men's water polo team added ten new players to their 2023 signing class. 

Brendon Gyapjas | Fr. | GK | Kecskemét, Hungary | Vörösmarty Mihály High School 

"Brendon Gyapjas is a very high-level goalkeeper from Hungary who brings a lot of international experience from being the starting goalkeeper for the junior and youth national teams of Hungary. We are excited to have him and his experience for the next four years." - Interim Head Gabor Sarusi

  • Placed seventh at the 2022 Hungarian Championship with Szeged.
  • Second-best statistics in the First League at the age of 18.
  • Placed third in the U17 European Championship for his home country of Hungary.
  • Placed fourth at the 2021 Junior World Championships for Hungary.

Alexey Poletaev | Fr. | GK | Irkutsk, Russia | Liceo Europeo

"Alexey is a freshman-class goalkeeper who has a lot of potential to help our program in the future. We wanted to bring two strong goalkeepers in this year and he also brings a lot of international experience just like Brendon" - Interim Head Coach Gabor Sarusi

Péter Kolos Kohári | Fr. | UT | Budapest, Hungary | Boldog Adolf Kolping Katolikus Iskola

"Péter is coming from BVSC one of the best programs in Hungary. He played at a really high level in the junior and youth national and club programs. He is one of those utility players who can play offense and defense really well and brings a lot of strength to a position that is key for our team. Nathan Correia | R-Fr. | 2-M | Johannesburg, South Africa | St Benedict's College

"Nathan brings a lot of size and strength for the 2-meter presence who has the potential to be dominant at the Division 1 level in the upcoming years." - Interim Head Coach Gabor Sarusi

  • Played on the 2020 U17 South African national team. 
  • A business administration major with a focus on finance. 

Giancarlo Marquez | Fr. | UTL | Port Moody, Canada | Burnaby North Secondary School

"Giancarlo is one of the best Canadian players of his age, he was a leader on his junior team and we are extremely lucky to have him. He is a very versatile player who has a lot of speed and a good vision of the game so once he learns our system he is going to be able to help us right away." - Interim Head Coach Gabor Sarusi

  • Played on both junior and youth Canadian national teams in 2023 at the Pan-Am's and World Championships where he was the leading goal scorer at both competitions.
  • Tallied 117 goals in 20 games to be named the top goal scorer of the NCL for the 2021 - 2022 season. 
  • Winner of the 2022 John Stockdale Award following his club season. 
  • Named MVP for his high school in 2019, 2020, and 2022.
  • Captain of his water polo team for 8 years where he was coached by Nikola Maric.

Rafael Ventura | Fr. | 2-M | Pasadena, Calif. | Loyola High School

" Rafael is coming from two very strong programs. He played for Loyola High School and Trojan Water Polo Club under very good coaches. He is a very technical 2-meter player who has the chance to make a big difference for us once he gets faster and stronger." - Interim Head Coach Gabor Sarusi

Mitchell Keightley | Fr. | UTL | Hamilton, New Zealand | Hamilton Boys' High School

"Mitchell is a very good pickup for us from New Zealand, he is a very fast and very strong left-hander. We definitely needed help on the right side of the pool and we feel like he is somebody who has a chance to grow and become a dominant player on that side." - Interim Head Coach Gabor Sarusi

  • Four-time National bronze medals with Waikato Water polo.
  • 2022 Hamilton Boys’ High School Player of the Year.
  • 2021 New Zeland Secondary Schools National Champion.
  • 2021 North Island Secondary Schools Champion.
  • New Zeland under 18 team selection 2022.

Louis Fehrensen | Fr | UTL | San Diego, Calif | Valhalla High School

Louis is a great utility player from San Diego who is very young for his class but has already shown maturity in many plays. He is somebody who can play on the wing, 2-meter offense and 2-meter defense so he is one of those players that can be whatever the team needs in certain games."  - Interim Head Coach Gabor Sarusi 

  • Named first-team All-League in 2021 for the Grossmont Conference
  • Named team MVP in 2021 for Valhalla High School. 
  • Started playing water polo in the 7th grade. 

Michael Montoro | Fr | UTL | San Diego, Calif | San Pasqual Highschool

"We are very excited to have Michael as well. He is a very quick and dominant player who we recruited to be a goal scorer for us in the future."  - Interim Head Coach Gabor Sarusi 

  • Named First Team All CIF his senior year.
  • 2023 San Deigo All Senior Team.
  • 2023 HS MVP Award.
  • Holds a high school league record for most goals scored.
  • Captained his high school water polo team senior year.
  • Lettered in both swimming and water polo. 

Mateja Bosić | R-Fr | DR | Zrenjanin, Serbia | Westcliff University

"We are very fortunate to have Mateja because he had an outstanding freshman year at Westcliff University. He scored over 120 goals as a freshman and he is a very natural scorer which shows. He is going to be someone that is going to help the team from the first game and on"  - Interim Head Coach Gabor Sarusi  

  • Leading scorer for Westcliff University tallying 125 goals for the 2022 season.
  • MVP of NAIA finals water polo championship.
  • Won multiple Serbian Junior Cups and Leagues with his club team KVK Radnicki from Kragujevac. 
  • Played on the Serbian Junior National Team.
