Spartans to Compete in Two Games at the Acrisure Holiday Invitational

SAN JOSE, Calif.- The San José State men’s basketball team (2-3, 0-0 MW) will face Tulsa (4-1, 0-0 AAC) at Acrisure Arena on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. as part of the Acrisure Holiday Invitational. The Spartans will then face either Northern Iowa (5-0, 0-0 MVC) or Loyola Chicago (1-5, 0-0 A-10) on Wednesday, Nov. 26 from Acrisure Arena on CBS Sports Network at either 11 a.m. or 1:30 p.m.

2025-26 Schedule

  • The Spartans are looking to return to postseason play for the third time in four years which would be the best stretch in program history. 
  • Last season, the Spartans competed in the NIT for the first time since 1981. 
  • The Spartans' 46 wins over their last three seasons is the most wins since the team won 46 games from 1985-88 while in the Big West conference.
  • This is the first meeting between SJSU and Tulsa since 2005. Both teams were members of the WAC from 1996-2005.
  • If the Spartans face Loyola Chicago, it will mark a rematch of last seasons' NIT opening round.
  • If the Spartans face Northern Iowa, it will be the first time the two programs will play ever.
  • Colby Garland is averaging 21.2 points per game, ranking first in the Mountain West and No. 28 in the country.
  • Garland is one of five players in the nation to average 21 points per game on at least a .631 field goal percentage.
  • Garland became the first Spartan since Adrian Oliver in 2008-09 to score 20+ in each of his first three games of the season.
  • At 21.2 ppg, Garland is the Mountain West's leading scorer and has scored 16 points or more in all five games this season.
  • Garland’s .631 field goal percentage is third best in the Mountain West
  • Against UCSB, Garland shot 11-13 from the field and 8-9 from the foul line.
  • Garland is the first Spartan to score 30 points without attempting a three since Brandon Clarke, who scored 36 against Air Force, on Jan. 14, 2017.
  • Garland is also the first Spartan to score 30 on at least 80% shooting from the field since D.J. Brown, who did it against CSU Bakersfield on Jan. 23, 2012.
  • No player this century has scored 30 points on .846 field goal percentage for the Spartans.
  • Yaphet Moundi has four double-doubles through five games this season. His four double-doubles are tops in the Mountain West and seventh most in the nation.
  • Moundi has a double-double in three consecutive games, becoming the first Spartan since Michael Steadman in 2019 to accomplish the feat.
  • Through five games this season, Moundi is averaging 11.8 points and 10.2 rebounds per game.
  • The last Spartan to finish a season averaging 10 or more rebounds per game was Coby Dietrick in 1969-70.
  • Moundi has four double-doubles so far this season. Last year, no Spartan had more than four double-doubles across the whole season.
  • According to KenPom, Moundi is 12th in DREB % nationally, 27th in fouls drawn/40, & 1st in the nation in FT rate (FTA/FGA).
  • On the season, Moundi has 38 free throw attempts and 27 shot attempts. Last season, nobody in the nation shot more free throws than field goals (Minimum 60% minutes played).
  • Redshirt freshman Ben Roseborough is currently averaging 11.8 points per game. The last Spartan freshman to average more than 10 points per game was Keith Fisher in 2017-18.
  • Roseborough has been one of the Mountain West's leading three point shooters so far this season. Roseborough's 2.6 threes per game ranks fifth in the Mountain West while his .433 three point percentage ranks fourth (Minimum 2.5 3FG/G average.
  • Jermaine Washington is averaging the second most minutes per game in the Mountain West this season. His averages of 12.0 points and 3.2 assists per game are career-highs. He is also averaging 2.4 made threes per game which ranks seventh in the conference.
  • Japhet Moupadele scored 13 points on 6-9 shooting in his career-debut against Bethesda.
  • The Spartans will have a completely new starting five for the second consecutive season.
  • The Spartans return just three players who saw minutes last season, equating to 19.4 percent of their scoring (Sadraque NgaNga - 6.8 ppg, Washington - 4.4 ppg & Pasha Goodarzi - 2.3 ppg).
  • SJSU added six new players this offseason from the transfer portal. They include Garland (Longwood), Adrian Myers (Mississippi State), JaVaughn Hannah (Western Michigan), Jaden Goodall (Cal), Moundi (Iona) & Marcus Overstreet (Mercer).
  • The Spartans added five freshmen to the squad, including Bell Jr., Damase Coly, Eren Karakaya, Japhet Moupadele & Douglas Langford.
  • The Spartans also add redshirt freshman Roseborough, who missed all of last season with an injury. Roseborough was a three star rated recruit and ranked as the 13th best player in California in his recruiting class.
  • The Spartans were picked to finish 10th in the Mountain West Preseason poll.
