Spartans Secure Victory Over USF Behind Strong Pitching and Late Power

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Brent Cota went 3-for-4, JC Osorio-Agard hit his first home run of the season, and Luka Pintar was dominant out of the bullpen to lead the San José State baseball team (3-3, 0-0 MW) in a 7-3 win against San Francisco (4-2, 0-0 WCC) Saturday afternoon from Excite Ballpark. 

The Spartans jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, plating three runs. Alex Fernandes sparked the rally with a leadoff walk and a stolen basePeyton Rowles followed with an RBI triple to right field, and Jake McCoy added an RBI single. Osorio-Agard capped the frame with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring McCoy.

San Francisco chipped away at the lead with a solo home run in the fourth and an RBI double in the fifth. However, SJSU reliever Pintar (1-0) took over in the fifth inning, throwing 4.1 innings of effective relief with a career-high five strikeouts to earn his first win at SJSU.

SJSU pulled away in the late stages of the contest:

  • 6th Inning: The Spartans capitalized on a USF error, with Osorio-Agard hitting an RBI single to score McCoy.
  • 7th Inning: Rowles singled, stole second, and eventually scored on a balk to extend the lead.
  • 8th Inning: Osorio-Agard put the game out of reach with a towering two-run home run to left field, scoring Cota.

Defensively, the Spartans were flawless, recording zero errors compared to three by San Francisco. The SJSU pitching staff combined for 10 strikeouts on the day , limiting the Dons to just eight hits
