Thomas Throws Gem in 8-0 Win over Gaels

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Behind a dominant complete-game shutout from starting pitcher David Thomas and a powered-up offense, the San José State baseball team (4-6, 0-0 Mountain West) defeated Saint Mary's College (6-4, 0-0 WCC) 8-0 on Saturday afternoon at Excite Ballpark.

Thomas (1-1) was masterful on the mound against his former school for the Spartans, scattering just four hits across nine scoreless innings to earn his first win of the season, first-ever complete game, and first career shutout. The right-hander struck out six batters and issued only one walk, throwing 91 pitches in the efficient outing.

Offensively, the Spartans tallied 12 hits, led by third baseman Alan Ramirez, who provided the early spark with his first career hit in only his second career at-bat, a three-run home run in the third inning to break a scoreless tie and put SJSU ahead for good. Right fielder Alex Fernandes, who went 4-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored, also had a big game for the Spartans.

  • After two quiet innings, the Spartans erupted for four runs in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Ramirez connected on a three-run homer off Saint Mary's starter Cam Staton.
  • Fernandes stayed hot at the plate, doubling twice in the contest to fuel the Spartan attack.
  • San José State added insurance late, scoring two runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth to secure the 8-0 victory.
  • Jake McCoy, Brent Cota, Rocco Caballero, and Peyton Rowles all had an RBI on the day, while Caballero scored a pair of runs.

UP NEXT: The Spartans and Gaels conclude their series tomorrow. First pitch from Excite Ballpark is scheduled for 1:05 p.m., and you can see it on the Mountain West Network.
