USAFA, Colo. – Jake McCoy hit a two run home run to lead the San José State baseball team (17-23, 5-9 MW) in a 16-6 eight inning loss to Air Force (20-20, 11-6 MW) Saturday afternoon from Erdle Field in the second game of a three game series.
The Spartans struck first in the opening inning when Alex Fernandes tripled and later scored on Peyton Rowles’ sacrifice fly. Air Force briefly took the lead after two runs from Air Force in the second. However, San José State erupted for four runs in the third behind Rowles’ two-RBI triple and a two-run blast from McCoy to take a 5–2 lead.
Air Force responded with a five-run bottom of the third, stringing together five extra-base hits to reclaim the lead for good. The Falcons continued to pile on with three more runs in the fourth and added insurance throughout the late innings. San José State finished with six runs on eight hits. Defensively, the Spartans committed four errors.
On the mound, Jesse Gutierrez (0-4) took the loss after surrendering 10 runs (nine earned) in 3.2 innings. Peter Herrick tossed the final 3.2 innings, allowing five earned runs on eight hits.
- Fernandes went 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored
- Fernandes tallied his 18th multi-hit game of the season
- McCoy’s home run was his 12th of the season and second of the series
- Rowles recorded three RBIs in the game, his fifth three RBI game of the season
- Rowles extended his hit streak to 17 games
- Gutierrez struck out three batters
