SAN JOSE, Calif. – Jake McCoy went 2-for-4 with a two run home run and a double to lead the San José State baseball team (13-18, 4-5 MW) in a 6-3 loss to Washington State (14-16, 7-5 MW) Saturday afternoon from Excite Ballpark in the final game of a three game series.
The Spartans came out swinging in the bottom of the first inning. After Alex Fernandes and Peyton Rowles sparked the offense with back-to-back singles, McCoy delivered a two-run home run to left field, giving SJSU an immediate 2-0 lead.

Washington State answered in the second with two runs of their own , but the Spartans' pitching staff, led by starter Dylan Smith, kept the game within reach for most of the afternoon. Smith went 6.0 innings, striking out one and allowing three runs on seven hits.
The game remained tied through the middle frames until the Cougars took a brief lead in the sixth. In the bottom of the seventh, Brent Cota led off with a triple to left field. Alan Ramirez then drove him home with a sacrifice fly, knotting the game at 3-3.
The deadlock was broken in the top of the ninth. With two outs and two runners on, Washington State hit a two-run single to left field. The Cougars added an insurance run to stretch the lead to 6-3. SJSU would be unable to answer back in the bottom of the ninth. Kyle Calzadiaz (1-3) took the loss for the Spartans.

- McCoy has homered in three consecutive games and in four of his last five
- McCoy has recorded multiple hits in 10 of his last 12 games
- Rowles went 2-for-4 with a run scored
- Landon Marchetti allowed no runs and one hit in 1.2 innings of relief
