Spartans Drop Midweek Duel at Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. –  Alex Fernandes went 2-for-5 with two RBIs to lead the San José State baseball team (13-19, 4-5 MW) in a 11-4 loss to Cal Poly (18-13, 10-5 Big West) Tuesday night from Baggett Stadium.

Cal Poly scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by a Mustang two-run double and a two-RBI single, putting the Spartans in an immediate hole they would not climb out of. The Mustangs added to their lead in the third, with a RBI single and a two-run home run three, extending the margin to 7–0. Cal Poly would lead by as many as 10 in the game and recorded an 11-run total on 16 hits.

San José State showed signs of life late in the game. The Spartans broke through in the sixth inning when Jake McCoy doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Rocco Caballero. They added three more runs in the eighth, highlighted by an RBI double from Neil Jansen and a two-run single from Fernandes.

Offensively, San José State managed eight hits, with Fernandes, Jansen, and McCoy each contributing key knocks. However, the Spartans struggled to deliver with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base, limiting their ability to mount a full comeback.

On the mound, starter Tyler Albanese took the loss. The Spartans’ bullpen saw extended action with six different relievers making appearances.

  • Fernandes, Peyton Rowles and Caballero each recorded two hits in the game
  • Fernandes notched his eighth multi-RBI game of the season
  • EJ McGrew and Sam Boyle did not allow any runs in an inning of relief each
  • The Spartans’ pitching staff combined to strike out eight batters with Caden Duke leading the way with four

UP NEXT: The Spartans will open a three game series at Nevada on Friday, April 10, at 6:05 p.m. at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park. The game can be watched on Mountain West Network.
