Tortell Daly’s Brace Powers Spartans Past Air Force

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Jordi Tortell Daly recorded his first career brace to lead San José State men’s soccer team (4-6-2, 1-2-1 MW) in a 3-1 victory over Air Force (2-5-4, 1-2-1 MW) on Saturday night from the Spartan Soccer Stadium.

The Spartans controlled possession throughout the match and outshot the Falcons, 22-9, while earning 10 corner kicks. After the teams entered halftime tied at 1-1, San José State pulled away with two goals in the final 16 minutes.

Isac Enriquez opened the scoring in the 20th minute, finishing a pass from Tiko Moodie and Diego Nieves to give the Spartans an early lead. Air Force answered before halftime when Xidane Espinoza scored an unassisted goal in the 37th minute, also off a corner kick.

San José State regained the advantage in the 75th minute. Cameron Cook set up a long run from Fernando Duarte which then allowed Tortell Daly to head in a ricocheting ball into the back of the net. 

Tortell Daly struck again in the 86th minute, taking a lobbed through pass from Neo Ruiz and beating the Air Force goalkeeper with a rocket into the bottom left corner to put the Spartans ahead by two. 

Goalkeeper Ronin Axelson made four saves to earn the victory.

  • The Spartans have now defeated Air Force four times in a row and have earned a result against the Falcons in five consecutive matches
  • This is the second match this season the Spartans have scored two goals after the 70th minutes
  • Tortell Daly joins Amir Anwary as the only Spartans to record a brace this season
