The San José State Spartans' offense came out fast against the New Hampshire Wildcats (0-1), scoring three touchdowns in the first quarter in a 43-13 win.
The Spartans (1-0) had 464 total yards of offense in the first half and finished with 707 yards in the season opener, fifth most yards for a game in school history.
Scoring twice in the first quarter, running back Tyler Ervin rushed for a career-high three touchdowns on 20 carries for 127 yards for the Spartans, who scored five of their six touchdowns on the ground. Thomas Tucker accounted for the other two scores and finished with 74 yards.
Joe Gray and Kenny Potter shared the quarterback duties for San José State. Gray played the first and third quarters and Potter was under center for the second and fourth quarters. Gray completed his first six passes and finished 16-of-20 for 253 yards and a touchdown. Potter was 13-of-14 for 167 yards and gained 45 yards on seven carries.
Gray's touchdown pass was for 34 yards to a wide-open tight end Billy Freeman in the middle of the field giving the Spartans a 13-0 first-quarter lead.
The Spartans' defense held the Wildcats to 186 yards. Six times, New Hampshire went three-and-out on offense and only had 10 first downs in the game. New Hampshire quarterback Sean Goldrich had his poorest game as a starter completing only 10-of-22 for 60 passing yards.
New Hampshire's Dalton Crossan opened the second quarter with a 26-yard touchdown run. Reserve running back Trevon Bryant closed out the scoring with a 4-yard run midway through the fourth quarter.
San Jose State heads to Air Force for a September 12 Mountain West opener for both teams.
