San José State record: 4-4, 3-2 Mountain West. The Spartans used a victory to reach the .500 plateau for the third time this season. San José State posted a 31-21 conference win over New Mexico on October 24.
BYU record: 6-2. The Cougars won their fourth in a row with a 70-6 triumph over Wagner on October 24 to become bowl-eligible. Like the Spartans, BYU had a bye the week of October 31.
Series history: The Spartans lead the series, 10-6. The home team has a win in the last six meetings between these teams. San José State won the most recent game, 20-14, on November 17, 2012. BYU's last win in the series was a 29-16 victory on October 8, 2011 in Provo. The last time the road team won in this series was a 19-9 Cougar victory in Spartan Stadium on September 24, 1966.

Late-night Spartans: The 8:30 p.m. (PT) San José State-BYU game time is the latest for the Spartans in 2015 regardless of time zone. The September 12 San José State at Air Force game officially started at 8:21 p.m. (MT) and ended at 11:53 p.m. (MT)/10:53 p.m. (PT). On November 21, San José State plays at Hawai'i in a 6:00 p.m. (HT)/8:00 p.m. (PT) Mountain West contest. Besides the Air Force game, the September 3 New Hampshire win (10:04 p.m. PT), the September 26 Fresno State victory (10:56 p.m. PT) and the October 17 San Diego State Homecoming game (10:34 p.m. PT) ended after 10:00 p.m. local time. The last time a San José State home game ended after 11:00 p.m. (PT) was on November 24, 2012 when the Spartans defeated Louisiana Tech, 52-43. The game began at 7:41 p.m. and officially ended at 11:20 p.m. (PT).
Seven Spartans played in the 2012 BYU win: Seven current San José State players played in the 2012 win over BYU. Long snapper Ryan DiSalvo, placekicker Austin Lopez and cornerback Jimmy Pruitt had the most prominent roles. DiSalvo handled all long snapping. Lopez converted two PATs after his first PAT was blocked. Pruitt, who has eight career interceptions, had the first of his career in the fourth quarter deep in Spartan territory ending a potential BYU scoring drive. Safety Simon Connette, defensive tackle Tony Popovich, offensive tackle Wes Schweitzer and wide receiver Hansell Wilson either had reserve or special teams roles. Nineteen more Spartans on the 2015 team were on the roster in 2012.
Coming off a bye week: San José State split its two games following a bye week in the 2014 season. The Spartans lost at Minnesota, 24-7, on September 20 and won in overtime at Wyoming, 27-20, on October 18.
Spartans in news during bye week: Running back Tyler Ervin, tight end Billy Freeman and punter Michael Carrizosa were in the news during San José State's bye week ending October 31. Ervin was named to the Paul Hornung Award Weekly Honor Roll for the second time this season and added to the Doak Walker Award watch list recognizing college football's top running back. For the third time this season, Freeman was one of two honorable mention choices for the John Mackey Tight End of the Week Award. Carrizosa was one of 79 punters listed for the annual Ray Guy Award honoring the top punter in the country for the season.
Team passing completion percentage:  San José State enters the BYU game with a team passing completion percentage of 67.9 percent - tops in the Mountain West. In the New Hampshire (9/3) and Fresno State (9/26) wins, the Spartans completed 85.7 percent and 86.9 percent of their passes, respectively, and did not throw an interception in either game. San José State quarterback Kenny Potter ranks 14th nationally and first in the Mountain West with a 67.7 percent pass completion rate.
College football's busiest player: Tyler Ervin heads into the BYU game with more opportunities to handle the football either by rushing, receiving, punt return, kickoff return or interception return than any Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) player this season. Twice in the team's last five games, he had the football more than 40 times. When the 177-pound senior ran for a school record 300 yards against Fresno State (9/26), he accumulated 345 yards of all-purpose running on 42 rushes and four pass receptions. In the recent New Mexico victory, he handled the ball 41 times (36 rushes, two pass receptions, three kickoff returns).
Spartans among national leaders in blocked kicks:  San José State is one of 16 teams tied for sixth nationally in blocked kicks with the three. Each of the Spartans' three blocks occurred in a team victory - New Hampshire, UNLV and New Mexico. San José State's opponent, BYU, is tied for third in the category with four blocked kicks this season.
Penalties stay down:  San José State is among the least penalized teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) in games played through October 31. The Spartans rank second in fewest penalty yards per game (32.5) and fewest penalty yards (260) and tied for fifth in fewest penalties per game (4.13).
