Colorado Springs, Colo.----- San Jose State University punter Michael Carrizosa, running back Tyler Ervin and tight end Billy Freeman were named to the 25-player 2015 All-Mountain West football first team players in a vote by the conference's 12 coaching staffs and selected media members.
Carrizosa was the national leader in individual punting for 10 of the first 12 weeks of the season and finished the regular season with a 47.7 average. The sophomore from Salinas, Calif., is one of three finalists for the Ray Guy Award honoring the nation's top punter.
Ervin was one of the most durable, productive and versatile running backs in the country in 2015. He rushed for 1,469 yards, caught 44 passes for 337 yards and averaged 23.9 yards per kickoff return. The senior from Colton, Calif., presently ranks second nationally in all-purpose running with a 200.8 yards per game average.
Freeman became just the second tight end to lead a San Jose State team in all the major receiving categories with personal bests of 47 receptions, 581 yards and six touchdowns. The junior from Mesa, Ariz., was one of eight semifinalists for the John Mackey Award recognizing the nation's top tight end.
The three first-team selections match the most for a San Jose State team since joining the Mountain West in 2013. Overall, 11 Spartans were named either first, second or honorable mention honorees.
Offensive tackle Wes Schweitzer, who started 36 consecutive games over a three-season span and 37 for his Spartan career, and linebacker Christian Tago, #17-nationally for total tackles with 117 were second-team picks.
Quarterback Kenny Potter, the Mountain West's most accurate passer at 68.5 percent, and sophomore linemen Jeremiah Kolone and Nate Velichko were honorable mention choices on offense. Defensive backs Cleveland Wallace, III, Jimmy Pruitt and Maurice McKnight were honorable mention choices on defense. Wallace, III, and Pruitt shared the team lead with three interceptions. McKnight was second on the team with 95 tackles and led the Spartans with two forced fumbles.
