Jan. 1, 2016 The first Mountain West team championship of any kind, a bowl win rooted in collective academic success, individual champions and academic and athletics achievements by San Jose State University's 20 intercollegiate athletics teams, student-athletes and alumni filled the 2015 calendar.

January 21 â€" Ta'Rea Cunnigan became the all-time leading scorer in San Jose State University basketball history in an 88-78 conference win over Boise State. The All-Mountain selection would finish her career with 2,062 points, the first female or male Spartan to score at least 2,000 points.

February 21 (Women's Swimming) â€" Morgan McCormick became the first San Jose State swimmer to win an individual Mountain West Championship by setting a new conference record in the 200 backstroke. McCormick was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Year and would represent San Jose State at the NCAA Championships in three events. Despite a rough start to the conference championships, the Spartans finished moved up each night to finish seventh.

March 7 (Beach Volleyball) â€" Nandyala Gama and Bre Moreland became the first San Jose State pair to win a match playing in the #1-position in the lineup. The Spartan duo was a convincing winner over a USF twosome in a NorCal Invitational dual match hosted by Stanford.

March 10 (Women's Basketball) â€" San Jose State picked up its second win of the Mountain West Tournament becoming the first eight-seed to defeat a one-seed in conference tournament history with a 64-55 upset of Colorado State.

March 22 (Women's Gymnastics) â€" Cami Guyer and Marissa Unpingco are individual champions and San Jose State finishes in second place at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships. Guyer is named the Gymnast of the Year after winning the vault, floor and all-around titles. Unpingco took home the balance beam championship.

April 21 (Academics) â€" A record number 56 Spartans qualified academically for the University's 53rd annual Honors Convocation recognizing President's Scholars and Dean's Scholars. As a department, its student-athletes had a 33.3 percent increase in number of award recipients.

April 26 (Women's Water Polo) â€" For the first time in school history, San Jose State posted back-to-back 20-win seasons winning two matches at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship for fifth place. The Spartans knocked out CSU Bakersfield in an elimination match and defeated host Arizona State, 9-8, for its best conference tournament finish in four years. Donia Momen came off the bench for the game-winner against Arizona State. All-American Clara Espar Llaquet set a conference tournament record scoring 12 goals including a single-match record of nine against CSU Bakersfield.

April 27 (Academics) â€" San Jose State's 13 Arthur Ashe, Jr., Sports Scholars are the most for any school in the Pacific Time Zone and the Mountain West Conference.

May 9 (Women's Golf) â€" San Jose State finishes in 16th place at the NCAA Regional Championships to end its season. The Spartans made their 21st appearance at the regional championships after finishing third at the Mountain West Championships and were ranked 40th out of 262 NCAA Division I teams in the final GolfStat rankings.

May 9 (Softball) â€" The best-hitting team in San Jose State history finished its season with a 37-19 win-loss record after an 8-0 shutout of New Mexico. The Spartans would have a final RPI ranking of 63 among 295 NCAA Division I programs. San Jose State had a .350 team batting average, scored 357 runs on 534 base hits and had a .482 slugging percentage â€" all single-season school records. Jessica Madrid, pitcher Allison Lang and outfielder Jessie Hufstetler were first-team All-Mountain West honorees.

May 15 (Baseball) â€" When San Jose State had a lead going into the late innings, a reliable bullpen usually finished up a Spartan win. The 3-0 shutout win over UNLV was an example with pitchers Kalei Contradies and Matt Brown combining on a four-hitter with 11 strikeouts. Centerfielder Andre Mercurio showed why he is among the school's top leadoff hitters going 3-for-4, scoring a run and driving home one more.

May 15 (Women's Track & Field) â€" Freshman Kelsey Johnson-Upshaw becomes the first San Jose State women's track and field conference champion after winning the Mountain West long jump title at San Diego State.

May 27 (Academic Success) â€" The NCAA announces San Jose State's Academic Progress Rate scores covering the years 2011 through 2014. Fourteen of 16 Spartan teams report scores of 975 or more out of 1,000. The men's cross country team earns a Public Recognition Award for a 1,000 score. Football has an APR score of 975, the second best among the seven FBS programs based in California, which becomes very important and meaningful later in the year.

May 28 (Women's Tennis) â€" For the second time in the last three seasons, San Jose State finished nationally-ranked. The Spartans were ranked for 10 weeks during the season and as high as #53 before settling in at #73 in the final rankings. San Jose State reached the Mountain West Championship semifinal round before being edged by host New Mexico, 4-3.

May 29 (Softball) â€" Michelle Cox is named a Capital One Academic All-America Division I second-team honoree. The senior from Sydney, Australia, majored in business administration and had a 3.78 cumulative grade-point average when she was nominated. Cox batted .419 and led the Spartans with 14 stolen bases.

June 25 (Track & Field & Women's Cross Country) â€" Rebecca Garcia becomes the second Spartan in a month to receive Capital One Academic All-America honors. The senior distance runner from Irvine, Calif., was a Division I third-team honoree.

June 26 (Track & Field) â€" Freshmen Makayla Webb and Craig Huff qualified for and raced in the 2015 USA Junior Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. Webb competed in the 400 hurdles and Huff raced in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

July 23 (Women's Basketball) â€" For the second year in a row, a San Jose State University student-athlete was named the Mountain West's NCAA Woman of the Year honoree for 2015. Ta'Rea Cunnigan was the conference award winner, one year after Spartan swimmer Darcie Anderson was the Mountain West's co-winner in 2014.

July 27 (Women's Tennis) â€" Chad Skorupka was promoted to head coach following the departure of Sylvain Malroux to the University of Nevada as the new men's tennis coach. Skorupka first joined the Spartans coaching staff for the 2012-13 season after nine seasons as a successful head coach at Wake Forest and Yale.

September 5 (Men's Water Polo) â€" A standing room only crowd was at the Aquatics Center for San Jose State's reinstatement of men's water polo and the Spartans celebrated their return with a 13-7 win over Santa Clara.

September 20 (Women's Golf) â€" Hall of Famer and San Jose State legend Juli Inkster and Pat Hurst, who led the Spartans to the 1989 NCAA Women's Golf Championship, serve as the United States captain and assistant captain for the winning Solheim Cup team. On the final day, the American side staged the greatest comeback in the Cup's history winning 8.5 out of a possible 12 points. In December, Inkster would be named the U.S. captain for the 2017 Solheim Cup in Des Moines, Iowa.

September 26 (Football) - Tyler Ervin proved to be one of the most durable college football players in 2015 and was a record-setting running back. In the 49-23 win over Fresno State, Ervin carried 42 times for a San Jose State single-game record 300 yards and three touchdowns.

September 27 (Women's Soccer) â€" Zoe Makrigiannis became the San Jose State career leader for individual shutouts with 12 in a 2-0 win at Colorado State. Makrigannis would finish her Spartan career with 16 individual shutouts, first-team All-Mountain West honors and be named the conference's Defensive Player of the Year.

October 13 (Men's Golf) - Cody Blick would win two tournaments, earn All-Mountain West honors, qualify for the U.S. Amateur championship and average 70.77 strokes for 35 rounds of play during the calendar year. His fifth career collegiate win came at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational with a 17-under par 196 as San Jose State set a team scoring record with 27-under par 825.

October 27 (Women's Golf) â€" The Spartans and junior My Leander rewrite the San Jose State record book at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown. As a team, the Spartans were a record-setting 21-under par and Leander's 14-under par 202 is the best for a 54-hole tournament. Leander finished third among 105 players and the Spartans eighth in the 19-team field.

November 2 (Women's Soccer) â€" It only took two seasons for San Jose State's Lauren Hanson to earn Mountain West Coach of the Year honors in women's soccer. Zoe Makrigiannis, Darlene Rodriguez and Dorthe Hoppius were first-team All-Mountain West honorees.

November 5 (Women's Volleyball) â€" San Jose State picked up its 13th and final win of the season with a 3-0 shutout of Utah State. The Spartans finished with their best season win total since 2012. Senior Tyanna Roy, who represented San Jose State on the Mountain West's summer all-star touring team in Europe, was an honorable mention all-conference selection at the end of the season.

November 7 (Women's Soccer) â€" San Jose State wins its first Mountain West Championship in any sport defeating regular-season champion San Diego State, 4-2, in a penalty kick shootout. Freshman Paige Simoneau was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player for stopping three penalty kicks in the Spartans' three-game win streak to earn the University's second NCAA Tournament appearance in school history.

December 22 (Men's Basketball) â€" The Spartans set a Mountain West record for points scored in a game and several single-game team scoring marks in a 128-66 victory over Life Pacific. With a lot more length and size on the 2015-16 team, San Jose State's variety of lineup combinations paid off with NCAA Division I non-conference wins in November over Montana and San Diego.
