This Week In Spartan Athletics - Feb. 18-24

Baseball (3-0)
This Week: The Spartans play four games at home this week, starting Tuesday with Pacific, followed by a weekend series with UC Riverside.

Last Week: The team started the season 3-0 with a doubleheader sweep of Santa Clara, 8-5 and 4-3 on Sunday and 20-10 on Monday.

Spartan Fact: The Spartans started the year 3-0 for the first time since the 2011 season when the team started 6-0 including two wins over nationally-ranked UCLA that year.

Softball (5-5)
This Week: The Spartan softball team opens the home portion of the schedule with the Silicon Valley Classic hosted by the Spartans and Santa Clara. Games will be played at the Spartan Softball Complex.

Last Week: The team went 2-2 at the Troy Cox Classic, defeating Montana, 6-5, and New Mexico State, 3-1, but falling to Texas State, 12-3, and Bradley, 14-6.

Spartan Fact: Makayla Englestad is hitting .429 to lead the team. She is 12-for-28 at the plate with 8 runs scored and 3 doubles.

Women's Swimming & Diving
This Week: The Spartans are in Minneapolis for the 2019 Mountain West Championships at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.

Last Year's Championship: The Spartans finished 10th at the 2018 MW Championship. Former Spartan Colleen Humel was third in the 100 back, second in the 200 back, set school records in the 50 and 100 back as the leadoff swimmer in the 200 and 400 medley relays, respectively, had a personal best in the 200 individual medley and swam a 49.87 split time anchoring the Spartans' second fastest 400 freestyle relay in school history.

Indoor Track & Field
This Week: The Spartans travel to Albuquerque, N.M., for the 2019 Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Championships February 21-23.

Spartan Fact (Women's): There are 14 Spartans in 11 events (eight individual races, two relays, one weight throw).Sarahvaughn King is the highest rated Spartan going into the meet - 7th in the 400 meters with her school record time of 56.57 (converted).

Spartan Fact (Men's): This is the first indoor conference championship meet for the men since 1988. There are 15 Spartans entered in 11 events (seven individual races, two relays and the long and triple jump).

Men's Basketball (3-21, 0-12)
This Week: San José State hosts Colorado State this Wednesday night at The Event Center before traveling to Colorado to face Air Force Saturday afternoon.

Last Week: The Spartans lost at New Mexico, 92-60, and at home to UNLV, 71-64.

Spartan Fact: Noah Baumann set a school record on Saturday for the most consecutive games with a three-point field goal made. He begins the week with a 22-game streak, breaking the record of 21 set by Robert Owens during the 2009-10 season.

Women's Basketball (2-21, 1-11)
This Week: The Spartans travel to Colorado State for the only meeting between the two teams this season. SJSU returns home for an afternoon game on Saturday against Air Force.

Last Week: San José State lost to New Mexico, 79-60, and at UNLV 74-70.

Spartan Fact: Alexis Harris scored six points and blocked a pair of shots in the UNLV game.  She has 44 blocks in her career and ranks 24th on the SJSU career-blocks list. Mikaylah Wilson scored four points, grabbed four boards and with her one block, the 45th of her career, is 23rd on the SJSU blocks list.

Women's Gymnastics
This Week: San José State travels up Interstate 80 to compete at UC Davis this Friday night.
 
Last Week: The Spartans scored a season-high 194.400 Friday night in a meet with Sacramento State and New Hampshire.
 
Spartan Fact: Three Spartans won or tied for first on three events at last Friday's meet. Kaprece Nadonza had a season-best 9.875 on bars to tie for first. Josalyn Ray scored a career-best 9.825 on beam to tie for first. Taylor Chan recorded her fourth 9.900 on floor this season to win the event.

Women's Golf
This Week: The 33rd-ranked Spartans are currently playing at The Rebel Beach Tournament in Las Vegas. First and second rounds are being played on Monday with the finish of the second round and the final round Tuesday morning.

New Addition: The Spartans added redshirt freshman Maddie White to the roster this semester. White, from Lompoc, transferred from BYU and is the younger sister of former BYU All-American Alex White.

Spartan Fact: The Spartans started the spring season ranked 33rd nationally. Abegail Arevalo is ranked 38th individually.

Beach Volleyball
This Week: The team opens the 2019 season this Friday with a dual against San Francisco and an exhibition dual against West Valley.

Spartan Fact: The Spartans finished the 2018 season with 10 wins, the most in school history.

Men's Golf
This Week: The Spartans are practicing this week for the Southwestern Intercollegiate on February 25-26.

Spartan Fact: Alum Mark Hubbard picked up his first win on the Web.com Tour on Sunday, posting a 26-under-par 262 at the LECOM Suncoast Classic. Hubbard posted rounds of 65-68-64-67. He won the tournament by two strokes over runner-up Maverick McNealy, the former star at Stanford.

Women's Tennis (3-0)
This Week: The Spartans return to Spartan Tennis Complex for a match against San Francisco this Wednesday. The team then travels to Santa Barbara for matches against #25 Washington on Saturday and UC Santa Barbara on Sunday.

Last Match: The Spartans were rained out against San Francisco last Friday.

Spartan Fact: San José State is looking to go 4-0 for the first time this century.

Women's Water Polo (2-1)
This Week: The Spartans travel to Irvine this weekend for the Barbara Kalbus Invitational, a 16-team tournament played over three days. The Spartans are in the same quadrant as Hawaii, California and UC San Diego.

Last Time: San José State played an exhibition game with the Chinese national team, falling 20-5 last Wednesday.

Spartan Fact: The Spartans are currently ranked 12th in the national coaches poll.
