Record-Setting Weekend For Spartans

Jennifer Sandoval and Jeanette Zambrano each set a San Jose State University women's track and field record highlighting a weekend of string distance performances at the Stanford Invitational at Stanford and Mike Fanelli Track and Field Classic at Chabot College in Hayward, Calif.

Zambrano got the ball rolling for the Spartans at Stanford on March 29 with her 3,000 meter steeplechase winning time of 10:10.28. She broke her own record of 10:30.69 set a year ago at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival.

Sandoval closed out the evening at Stanford with a 33:37.38 in the 10,000 meters. Her sixth-place finish in her first 10,000 of the season was tops among the five Mountain West runners in the section of 32 entries and eclipsed her own record in the event by more than 26 seconds.

Freshman Eseta Finau, San Jose State's first women's pole vaulter, went a season-best 11-10.75 tying for fourth place. Her 3.63-meter mark matched the winning mark by Angela Gray of Azusa Pacific who won the event based on fewer misses.

Sophomore Kai Bohannon and freshmen Evelin Meza and Mikayla Akers turned in the best performances for the Spartan women at the Mike Fanelli Classic held at Cox Stadium on the Chabot College campus. All three ran their way into the school's top-three list in their respective events.

Bohannon navigated the 3,000 steeplechase in 10:40.98, ninth in the race, a personal best and #2-all-time at San Jose State. Her previous best was two weeks earlier at the Hornet Invitational when she ran a 10:58.26.

Meza ran her 5,000 meters in 16:51.58 finishing 20th overall in a field of 157 entries. Her time now ranks #3 on the San Jose State top-10 list.

Akers posted a season-best 2:13.26 in the 800 meters, good for the #3-spot at San Jose State.

The Spartans have a week off from competition. San Jose State's next meet is Saturday, April 13, at the Bulldog Invite in Fresno.
