San José State record: 5-6, 4-3 Mountain West. The Spartans have a three-game losing streak after Navy defeated San José State, 58-52 in the third overtime, on November 22.

#16/#13-Fresno State record: 10-0, 7-0 Mountain West. The Bulldogs have a 10-game winning streak after scoring a season-high in a 69-28 victory over New Mexico.

San José State-Fresno State series: Fresno State leads the series, 38-34-3. The Spartans won the most recent meeting between these teams, 27-24, in Fresno to conclude the 2011 season for both teams. Prior to 2011, the Bulldogs won the previous four meetings. San José State's last win over Fresno State in Spartan Stadium was a 24-14 victory to conclude the 2006 regular season. Darryl Rogers was Fresno State's head coach from 1966 through 1972 and in charge of San José State's program from 1973 through 1975. Rogers compiled a 43-32-1 win-loss record with the Bulldogs and a 22-9-3 mark with the Spartans.
Mike Martz was a San José State graduate assistant in 1975 and assistant coach at Fresno State in 1979.
