Colorado Springs, Colo. - Fifty-two (52) San José State University student-athletes from nine sports were named Academic All-Mountain West Conference honorees for the 2014 spring season.
The group of Spartans helped the conference achieve a league-record 897 honorees that met the criteria of completing at least one academic term as a MW member while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better while participating in at least 50 percent of the team's competitions. The mark surpasses the previous record of 783 set during the 2010-11 academic year.
The women's swimming and diving team led SJSU with 17 honorees, including four-time winner Darcie Anderson. There are 15 student-athletes between the two diamond sports on the list - nine from the softball team and six from baseball. Women's track and field, women's basketball and women's tennis each had five members make the list. Sabastiani Leon Chao of women's tennis also earned the fourth academic all-conference award of her Spartan career.
Two men's basketball players, two women's golfers and one men's golfer comprised the remainder of the Spartans to receive academic honors.
The spring announcement brings San José State's total number of 2013-14 academic all-conference honorees to 120. There were 50 Spartan student-athletes on the MW's fall list, while eight gymnasts and seven women's water polo players earned awards in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. There were three academic all-Western Athletic Conference honorees on the men's soccer team.
