Series history: This is the first meeting between these teams.
Season captains named: Running back Tyler Ervin, cornerback Jimmy Pruitt, offensive tackle Wes Schweitzer and linebacker Christian Tago were named team captains for the 2015 season. Tago is the only non-senior among the four.
New assistant coaches: Offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Al Borges, special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Dan Ferrigno and offensive line coach Adam Stenavich are in their first season as San José State assistant football coaches. Combined, the new Spartan assistants have 63 seasons (Ferrigno, 34; Borges, 28; Stenavich, 1) of major college coaching experience.
Returning starters: The 2015 San José State team has 16 returning starters (8 offense, 6 defense, 2 kickers). Offensive linemen Evan Sarver, Nate Velichko, and Wes Schweitzer and wide receivers Hansell Wilson and Tyler Winston are the five returning starters to start in all 12 games last season. Schweitzer has the longest consecutive starting streak among active Spartans with 24 of his 25 career starts occurring since the beginning of the 2014 season. Winston is the only other San José State player with consecutive starts carrying over from the 2013 season and enters 2015 with 20 consecutive starting calls.
Possibly six first-time starters: Based on the August 26 depth chart, as many as six players could be making their first major college start in the season opener against New Hampshire. Center Keoni Taylor, either Chris Gonzalez or Doug Blacksill at right guard, defensive end Nick Oreglia, defensive tackles Loni Fa or Bryson Bridges, linebacker Frank Ginda and safety Vincenté Miles, Jr., may make their first start as a Spartan in the September 3 game vs. New Hampshire. Miles started four games for Arizona in 2012.
True freshman starters: Linebacker Frank Ginda could become the third San José State first-time freshman to start in a season-opening game since the 2010 season. In 2010, linebacker Vince Buhagiar started against #1-Alabama. In 2013, tight end Andrew Vollert was a starter in the Sacramento State win.
Dual-sport Spartans: Since the end of the 2014 football season, wide receiver Tyler Winston and quarterback Mitch Ravizza played a second NCAA Division I sport. Winston played 21 minutes and scored 4 points as a reserve guard in the San José State men's basketball game against Seattle University (12/13/14). Ravizza completed his third season as a utility player/pinch runner on the Spartan baseball team.
