Fairfax, Va.-A record 41 San José State University student-athletes have been honored as 2018 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholars by Diverse Issues in Higher Education. San José State leads the nation in the number of student-athletes selected for this honor.
The publication's annual awards program recognized undergraduate student-athletes of color who personify Arthur Ashe's ideals of scholarship, athletics achievement and humanitarianism. Student-athletes selected must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and be active in community service activities.
San José State's 41 honorees represent 11 sports with women's swimming and diving leading the way with 10 honorees. Women's soccer and women's track and field each had seven honorees, while women's gymnastics has five selections. San José State's total are 16 more than in 2017 and are the most of any school in the Mountain West.
Seven student-athletes received the honor for the third time in her career - Brenna Bushey & Kylie Fonseca (women's swimming & diving), Jamie Hirai (volleyball), Nicole Iloanya & Kelsey Johnson-Upshaw (women's track & field), Myzhanique Ladd (women's basketball) and Kaitlin Won (women's gymnastics).
"We are proud that a record number of our outstanding San José State student-athletes were honored by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education," said Eileen Daley, San José State University senior associate athletics director for academics and student support. "To be associated with the legacy of Arthur Ashe, Jr., and what he personified is very meaningful."
