President's & Dean's Scholars

A San José State University Athletics Department record 56 current and recent student-athletes and cheerleaders will be recognized for exceptional academic achievements at the University's 53rd annual Honors Convocation, Friday, April 24, at The Event Center. The University-wide celebration for nearly 4,000 undergraduate students begins at 6:00 p.m.

The Honors Convocation recognizes superior students designated as President's Scholars and Dean's Scholars. A President's Scholar is a student who earned a 4.00 grade-point average at the University in at least two contiguous of the three semesters prior to the Honors Convocation. A Dean's Scholar is a student who achieved a 3.65 grade-point average during the same academic span. For this year's Honors Convocation, the Fall 2014, Spring 2014 and Fall 2013 semesters were used.

The 56 honorees represent a 33.3 percent increase over last year's 42 student-athletes to earn either academic distinction. Seventeen of the Spartans' 19 NCAA Division I-sponsored sports programs, three more than 2014, have at least one honoree. Women's swimming and diving and women's gymnastics each have the most student-athletes with eight each.

Breanna and Rebecca Garcia, twin seniors from Anaheim, Calif., and members of the women's cross country and track and field teams, are President's Scholars for the second year in a row. For Breanna, she is a three-time President's Scholar. Rebecca, a past president of the department's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, is a two-time President's Scholar and a 2013 Dean's Scholar.

Swimmer Darcie Anderson, a 2014 graduate, joined Breanna Garcia as a three-time President's Scholar. Anderson and gymnasts Julia Greer and Cassandra Harrison, two more San José State graduates, earned either President's Scholar or Dean's Scholar status every year since 2012.

Softball outfielder Michelle Cox, women's basketball guard Ta'Rea Cunnigan, swimmer Amber Nelson, and water polo player Dani Styles are four current Spartans earning Dean's Scholar honors for the third consecutive year.

Overall, 22 San José State student-athletes earned President's Scholar or Dean's Scholar status for at least the second time.

"We continue to be incredibly proud of the numerous San José State student-athletes who excel in the classroom. The fact that we set a new all-time high for sports representation and the number of student-athletes being honored speaks to the value our student-athletes, coaches and student-athlete support staff place on academic achievement," says Liz Jarnigan, San José State associate athletics director and director of student-athlete success services.
