Colorado Springs, Colo.— Another positive academic accomplishment for 65 San José State University student-athletes as they received a 2020-21 Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Award for their performances in the classroom during their athletic career.
The MW Scholar-Athlete Award is one of the highest academic honors bestowed by the conference. To be eligible for the award this year, student-athletes must have completed at least one semester at the institution and have a 3.5 or better cumulative grade point average. The athletic contribution/participation requirement has been omitted for this award this year due to the impact of COVID-19.
The Spartan student-athletes represent 11 sports, led by football with 13 honorees, followed by women's swimming and diving with 10, baseball with eight and women's golf with seven.
Two Spartan softball players, Makayla Englestad and Janessa Lozano, have the distinction of earning five MW Scholar Athlete awards during their career. Three other Spartans have the honor of receiving four MW Scholar-Athlete recognitions – Kai Bohannon (T&F/CC), Grace Garvey (SB) and Savannah Sendar (TN).
The Spartan Scholar-Athletes helped the Mountain West to a new league-record 1,352 student-athletes recognized.
