SAN JOSE, Calif. - San José State Athletics honored the hard working Women of Sparta for another outstanding year of work in the classroom on Monday evening at the 2021 Women's Scholar Athlete Celebration. Seventy-four student-athletes across all sports and disciplines earned GPAs of 3.5 or higher during the 2020 fall semester and/or a 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA celebrated virtually with teammates, fellow student-athletes, administrators and supporters of San José State Athletics.
The celebration was held via Zoom Monday evening and included a special appearance by former Spartan women's tennis player Roxanna "Rokie" Larijani, who shared with the current student-athletes her story of living with cystic fibrosis, surviving a double lung transplant and seeing her dream job come to fruition
"I want to tell you all to enjoy your life right now as much as you can, don't sweat the small stuff, and enjoy the time you have," said Larijani.
Fourteen student-athletes had a perfect 4.00 GPA during the 2020 fall semester - cross country runner Kai Bohannon, golfers Kajsa Arewfall, Jadan Gonzalez and Maddie White, water polo players Riley Agerbeek and Sierra Painter, volleyball players Cameron Blakely, Sarah Smevog and Summer Vercruyssen, softball player Jillian Figueroa, tennis player Klara Milojkovic, soccer player Madison Toomer and swimmers Megan Green and Shelby Mullendore.
"This has been a challenging year for all of you dealing with starts, stops and uncertainty," San José State Director of Athletics Marie Tuite told the participants. "I am proud of you all being able to handle these "speed bumps", support each other and accomplish all that you have this year."
