Series history: The series is tied, 3-3. The teams are meeting for the first time since 2004 when San José State and Tulsa were members of the Western Athletic Conference. Tulsa has wins in the last two meetings including a 34-24 decision in Tulsa on November 20, 2004. San José State's last win in the series was a 49-38 triumph in Tulsa on November 16, 2002. The Spartans have a 1-2 win-loss record in games played in Tulsa.

Possible first time starters: Based on the August 23 depth chart, six Spartans, two on offense and four on defense, are in line to make their first major college start in the opener at Tulsa. Left tackle Troy Kowalski and wide receiver Rahshead Johnson are the two most likely first-time starters on offense. Defensive lineman Owen Roberts and defensive backs Trevon Bierria, Dakari Monroe and Jeremy Kelly could get their first starting call on the defensive side.
New look to the kicking game: There will be San José State players in new roles and new responsibilities for returning Spartans in the kicking game.
Punter Michael Carrizosa is adding holding and kickoff responsibilities to his 2016 season repertoire. Carrizosa will be holding for Bryce Crawford, who is ahead of Jake Lanski, for the kick scoring responsibilities.
Freshman James Workman tops the depth chart as the long snapper for the Tulsa game. He is the first new San José State long snapper since the 2012 when Ryan DiSalvo, recently released by the Miami Dolphins, took over those duties for the next four seasons.
Rahshead Johnson is expected to join Tim Crawley returning kickoffs. Crawley will be the primary punt returner replacing Tyler Ervin, now with the Houston Texans.
Precision passing in a third consecutive season opener?: In San José State's last two season openers, Spartan quarterbacks completed 86.9 percent of their passes without an interception for 678 yards and four touchdowns. Kenny Potter, the Mountain West's most accurate passer last season, was 13-of-14 for 167 yards and no touchdowns in the 2015 season opener against New Hampshire.
The graduate transfer: Running back Deontae Cooper from the University of Washington and wide receiver Dontonio Jordan from Stanford University are two graduate transfers on the 2016 San Jose State football team.
