Zoe Makrigiannis wrapped up her third season as a volunteer assistant coach in 2020. The former Spartan Goalkeeper is in charge of overseeing and coaching the goalkeepers. Under Makrigiannis, the Spartan goalkeepers have been among the best in the conference, posting 19 shutouts in the 2018 and 2019 seasons, which were second-most among all Mountain West teams.
In 2019, Makrigiannis was tasked with coaching Seattle U. transfer Ariana Romero, who had a big season in the net. Romero finished the season ranked in the top three in both goals against average (.713) and save percentage (.878) in conference play. She finished the season with eight shutouts, the second-most in program history.
In her first season in the role, Makrigiannis coached her former teammate Paige Simoneau to one of the most successful seasons by a Spartan Goalkeeper in program history as San Jose State claimed their second Mountain West Tournament Championship of the last four seasons. Simoneau was a First Team All-Mountain West selection and the MVP of the 2018 Mountain West Tournament Championship.
Under Makrigiannis’ tutelage, Simoneau broke the school record for both single-season shutouts (11) and career shutouts (21), both formerly held by Makrigiannis herself. Simoneau also finished the season with the lowest goals against average in a single season (0.81) and holds the career record as well (0.92).
Makrigiannis coached Simoneau to a pair of Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week honors in 2018. She finished the season with only five goals conceded in conference play, and her eight shutouts in league play are a Mountain West record. Heading into the NCAA Tournament, Simoneau was tied for fourth nationally with her 11 shutouts.
Prior to her coaching role, Makrigiannis was a four-year star in the net at SJSU from 2012-2015, picking up two First Team All-Mountain West accolades and securing her place in the record books with 17 career shutouts, ranking second only to Simoneau.
Makrigiannis captained the 2015 squad that won the school's first-ever Mountain West Championship. The Canadian native had five road shutouts while holding MW opponents to a league-best 0.53 goals per game en route to being named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year and picking up First Team All-MW honors.
As a junior in 2014, Makrigiannis became the first Spartan to ever be named to a Mountain West All-Conference team. She registered a then-single-season school record seven shutouts in 19 matches en route to earning First Team All-MWC honors.
Makrigiannis began her mark on the Spartans' program early, making 11 starts in the goal in both her freshman and sophomore seasons.
Makrigiannis is currently working towards completing her Masters of Education at SJSU. Prior to her time at SJSU, she served as assistant coach at Langara College in Vancouver, B.C., Canada.
