John Dormann

Continuing to establish the Spartan name among national contenders, John Dormann is in his 13th season as the San Jose State University women's golf head coach. In his 20th season affiliated with the San Jose State golf programs, Dormann was the assistant for both the men's and women's teams from October 1998 through 2005 when he took over as the head coach for both teams. Dormann was named the women's head coach in April 2005. As head coach, Dormann has guided two Spartan teams to the national championships - 2013 in Athens Georgia and 2010 in Wilmington, N.C, eight teams to the NCAA Regional Championships, won the 2006, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 Western Athletic Conference Championship, captured eight in-season tournament titles and been ranked in the top-30 of the GolfStat rankings. The 2008-09 team won four regular season titles along with the WAC Championship. Former Spartan Erica Moston won the individual WAC?title twice (2007 & 2009). Dormann has recruited effectively and honed the games of young talents into tournament-proven skilled players. The three-time WAC Coach of the Year (2006, 2009, 2012) has coached two WAC champions including Moston, and three WAC Freshmen of the Year including Regan De Guzman. San Jose State players have received 14 first team and 10 second-team all-conference honors with Dormann as head coach. As proficient in the classroom as on the golf course, the 2008-09 team received the Order of Spartan Team GPA award for the highest combined team grade-point average for the fall and spring semesters. As the assistant coach for the men's and women's programs, the Spartans women's teams finished in the top-20 at the 1999 through 2001 NCAA Championships including a 15th place finish in 2000. San Jose State men's and women's golfers received All-Western Athletic Conference first or second-team recognition 24 times while he was the assistant coach. Ashley Gomes, a 2004 honorable mention All-American, was the 2004 WAC Champion and Player of the Year. In the classroom, Spartan golfers received 25 Academic All-WAC awards and 10 national awards for academic excellence from the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) during his tenure as the Spartans' top assistant. "In addition to building a national championship-caliber team, we want to develop a program and student-athletes that represent the best in San Jose and the university," says the Spartans' coach. Before coming on board with the Spartans, Dormann was a professional caddy on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour. He worked for Meg Mallon, the 1991 LPGA Player of the Year and two-time U.S. Open champion, and his wife, Dana Dormann, when she, too, was one of the LPGA's top players of the 1990's. Though Dana no longer competes as a LPGA touring pro on a regular basis, the Dormanns have reunited as player and caddy at three U.S. Open Championships. The native of Daly City, Calif., is a 1979 graduate of Riordan High School in San Francisco, Calif. A 1989 graduate of San Jose State, he majored in social studies. John and Dana have two sons, William, a student at UC Berkeley, and Jason, a sophomore at Foothill High School, and reside in Pleasanton, Calif.
